The PwC Paying for Tomorrow Prize for Students

How a country raises taxes can change its fortunes, and those of its people.

This major competition is part of PwC's campaign on building a UK tax system fit for the future. We want to hear from people from all walks of life on how the tax system should change. As the future workforce, we're really keen to get your views, and to make it relevant, we thought we'd focus on how tax can impact jobs.

For the chance of winning £20,000, we're inviting students* to write an answer to the following question:

How would you change the UK tax system to improve future employment prospects and drive the UK economy?

Some of you may know a bit about tax; others very little. No matter. There's lot of information on our Paying for Tomorrow webpages that may help, and another good starting point is the Treasury website.

Criteria
Entries will be between 2,000 and 3,000 words, and include a 300 word summary. Our suggested criteria is as follows:

The judges are not looking for detailed financial or technical analysis (although appendices, outlining research, can be included). Consideration will be given to:

  • the overall vision and its merit
  • articulation and strength of argument
  • the viability of the proposals - including recognition that any changes must maintain tax revenues
  • consideration of how the economy and the way people transact has changed, and will continue to change

Appendices will be included in the word count.

Judging Panel
An esteemed panel of experts will judge the competition. All the judges have a strong interest and understanding of the issues at stake and bring different perspectives

Prize Giving

The winner will be announced in February at a prize giving ceremony in London. The top three entrants will be invited to share their ideas, speaking for 5 minutes each. The two runners up will each receive £1,000.
